About Uryu

Ishida Uryu is a classmate of the main character, Ichigo. It is revealed that Uryu is the last of the Quincies, a race of humans whose mission is to destroy the Hollows that plague humanity. Since Soul Reapers allow Hollows to pass on to the Soul Society after being defeated, while Quincies feel they do not deserve to do so after being monsters, Quincies and Soul Reapers are at odds. Uryu particularly despises Soul Reapers because his beloved teacher and grandfather was killed by Soul Reapers, thus leaving a young Uryu horrilbly scarred. Despite all this, Uryu strikes up a friendship with Ichigo and other Soul Reapers and they become allies. Uryu seems standoffish on the outside, but in reality he is considerate, observant, intelligent, and cares deeply about those around him. His hobbies include sewing and reading.
