Why Draco + Hermione?

Why indeed. I feel that, in order to explain why so many people take interest in this particular pairing, I must pull examples from both the books and movies, as well as other factors that tie in.

First of all, in the book series, though Draco often makes fun of Hermione and calls her a "Mudblood," he's never actually done anything downright cruel to her. Even, in some instances, he's acted as if he doesn't actually hate her, like when she arrived at the Yule Ball in Goblet of Fire looking glamorous, and he didn't have one bad thing to say. If he truly hated her, he would have come up with some sort of insult.

Now let's look at Hermione. Even though she doesn't like Malfoy all that much, she certainly doesn't despise him nearly as much as you'd think she would aince he teases her so often. In The Chamber of Secrets, she couldn't bring herself to believe that he was the evil and murderous Heir of Slytherin, and in The Half-Blood Prince, she scoffed at the idea of Draco becoming a Death Eater. When she asked if Draco really would have killed Dumbledore, and Harry said no, she replied, "I knew it." She just can't believe that Draco is pure evil.

Then there's the movies. If you look at all the added encounters between Draco and Hermione in Prisoner of Azkaban, it's almost as if they want you to think something is going on between these two! And, it doesn't hurt that in several of the movies we catch Draco staring at her. (This is most likely due to the fact that, at least at one point in time, Tom Felton had a crush on Emmma Watson. The actors are good friends, and they have undeniable chemistry on-screen, which only makes us 'ship Dramione even more!)

It also must be stated that even without the slightest hint of evidence, this couple often comes to mind because of the desire to believe that opposites attract. Him, an aristocratic pureblood Slytherin? Her, an ordinary and bookish muggle-born Gryffindor? This story just screams Romeo and Juliet. Against all odds, they could find themselves attracted to one another. And it would have added an interesting twist: The hero's best friend falling in love with his rival. A Gryffindor and a Slytherin, together. Even JK Rowling herself said once in an interview that Draco and Hermione would have been a good idea. Of course, she prefers Ron and Hermione, but she can't deny that Draco and Hermone would have told a good story. It could have been Snape and Lily all over again, only this time, they might have had a happy ending.
